Asus to offer dual screen, affordable e-book reader
Asus had taken the markets by storm by introducing its affordable alternative for notebooks in the form of netbooks. History may soon repeat, as yet again the company plans to take everyone by surprise with the launch of their Eee Reader which is said to be the most affordable in its product range, reports TimesOnline.
Reportedly, this e-book reader is expected to be launched by the end of this year. This device is unlike the other ebook readers as it has a hinged spine like a printed book rather than a single flat screen. Hence, allows users to read from this device much like a hard bound book. Users will also be able to turn the pages from one screen to the next. This device can be used as a laptop as well, since it has a full color screen rather than a monochrome screen. Also disclosed is that this reader will feature ‘speakers, a webcam and a mic for Skype,’ allowing cheaper phone calls over the internet.
“Our ethos is innovation — as our brand is less well known, we have to run faster than the competition to develop new types of products,” said Asus. “Any such product — including an ereader — has to have the right combination of functionality and price. No one is going to buy one for £1,000.”
The company also aims at this product to be the most affordable in the market as it looks forward to come with a price of £100 mark. This device may have the ability to store hundreds of digital books and will convey the appearance of paper far better than a laptop screen does. This gadget will also download digital versions of newspapers and magazines. The arrival of this device will also give the industry a much needed shot in the arm, since as of now lesser than 80,000 e-reader devices have been sold in the UK, according to GfK, the retail analyst.
