Hope you remember the Sony PRS-505 eBook reader that was launched in the US. Today the company has now announced the enhancement of the same.

Sony plans to roll out its revamped version of the PRS-505 eBook reader that will boast compatibility with the EPUB format. Claiming to be the first reader digital book to support this format, the reader would be able to reflow digital books and publication through this International Digital Publishing Forum’s XML-based standard.

Now, users will have the freedom to access and accept secure and non-secure ebooks in the EPUB format.

According to Steve Haber, senior vice president of consumer product marketing for Sony Electronics, “The Reader is an open device and we will continue to explore formats that will provide the widest variety of content for Reader users. This upgrade opens the door to a whole host of paid and free content from third-party eBook stores, web sites and even public libraries.”

Apart from EPUB format, the digital book reader also promises to work effectively with Adobe eBooks and digital rights management. With this, consumers will get to experience reflow standard text-based Portable Document Format (PDF) eBooks that provides advanced flexibility and readability. All this is possible due to Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 software incorporation, which can be downloaded for free.

Users will also have the ability to transfer the documents to their devices by using the latest software or by updating Sony eBook Library software that comes bundled with the new Reader.

“We are excited about the support of the EPUB format, PDF reflow and Adobe Digital Editions in one of the most popular and advanced eBook reading devices. Adobe Digital Editions is transforming the digital reading experience through its support of open standards and broad content availability from retailers and libraries,” stated Dan Baum, vice president, New Business Initiatives at Adobe.

Sony also allows the users to retain and enhance their collections of eBooks with the help of BBeB formatted eBooks offered at the Sony eBook Store. Luckily, they do not have to reformat or repurchase them as all files are conveniently managed by the eBook Library software.

Consumers, who already own the PRS-505 model, are entitled to upgrade their units with these latest releases from the Sony support site.

Sony has also announced the availability of a limited edition red PRS-505 model that supports EPUB and enhanced. It can be purchased next month from SonyStyle stores and online at SonyStyle.com.
