SGI exhibits Octane III personal supercomputer at IDF 2009

SGI Octane IIISupercomputers normally used for research are bundled with an array of processors, more RAM and huge storage capacities. The Intel Developer Forum 2009 will see SGI’s Octane III personal supercomputer and the CloudRack C2 server cabinet at the Moscone center, San Fransisco.

Octane III is SGI’s latest take on portable and user-friendly personal supercomputers. Its 1TB capacity and 80 high-performance cores along with Nvidia graphics and GP-GPU capabilities seem to lend it an impressive air. The super computer is built to perform complex HPC applications and is pre-configured for user-ease.

“The Intel Developer Forum is an amazing opportunity to bring together various technology solution providers who are integrating Intel technology, and SGI is excited to be a part of this distinguished group,” remarked George Skaff, chief marketing officer, SGI. “We also look forward to showcasing our new personal supercomputer, Octane III, which bridges the gap for HPC users between the desktop and the data center.”

SGI’s server cabinet, CloudRack C2, consists of high-density compute trays and has improved its scale-out capability. It allows for advanced cluster computing with its MicroSlice technology, increased compute power and data center physicalization. With an enhanced cooling system, the product is crafted to meet the challenges of the Internet and cloud computing milieu.

The price of SGI’s latest innovation is under wraps for now.
