Microsoft to Introduce The Surface- A Touch Screen Table

Microsoft Surface Microsoft Corp. is all set to launch a coffee-table-shaped Surface computer. The surface computer can be called as a next generation computer, as the mouse and keyboard are totally eliminated from the systems and their place is taken by voice, pen and touch.

The Microsoft Surface is an advanced form of computer. It recognizes and interacts with devices placed on its surface e.g. the user can easily buy ringtones or change payment plans by placing their handsets on in-store displays, or a group of people gathered round the table can check out the photos on a digital camera placed on top.

Running on the Windows Vista operating system, the Microsoft Surface is incorporated with 30 inch display which is covered by a hard-plastic tabletop. The surface allows users to touch and move objects on screen for everything from digital finger painting and jigsaw puzzles, to ordering of a virtual menu in a restaurant.

“We see this as a multibillion dollar category, and we envision a time when surface computing technologies will be pervasive, from tabletops and counters to the hallway mirror,” said Chief Executive of Microsoft Steve Ballmer.

The Microsoft Surface is targeted to corporate sector, retailers, restaurants, hotel and casinos initially. The cost of the Surface will be between $5,000 and $10,000 each. With the price reduction Microsoft is also aiming at introducing the surface in various shapes and forms in coming three to five years.
